April 2006 - Mayoral Visit
We were very pleased to welcome the Mayor of Bury to our school
this week. He came to open our nature trail and to visit each
class.
The Mayor toured the school and was asked questions in each
class. These ranged from queries about his work, his chain
and his duties to questions about his favourite flowers (!).
He has written to me since the visit saying how much he enjoyed
the morning at Unsworth. He commented on the excellent behaviour
of the children and said how we should all be very proud
of our school.
You will have noticed that we have started to plant in our
gardens again. We would be very grateful if you could add
to our planting by adding an extra plant to your shopping
for your own gardens.
Please send in any child-friendly plants with your children
and we will help them to plant them in different areas
of the school grounds.
By the way, for those of you who are curious… the Mayor’s favourite
flower is the tulip!!

Staffing for September 2006
Mrs. Farrar has decided to take early retirement at the end
of this school year. She will have completed her sixteenth year
at Unsworth in July. We will mark her contribution to the education
of the children of Unsworth in some way at the end of term and
make sure she enjoys her final term at the school!
In September Mrs Woodman will be the Year
1 class teacher. The governors will be appointing a new Year
4 class teacher for September shortly.
French News
Bonjour!
Since September Years 3 and 4 have been learning French and
have studied various topics including greetings, the alphabet,
the weather, numbers, colours, food, shapes and more recently,
the family.
The children have been developing all four of the main language
skills—reading, writing, listening and speaking, with a
particular emphasis on the most difficult skill—speaking.

Both year groups are progressing very well with their vocabulary,
simple sentence building and pronunciation. They are all highly
motivated.
Of course, as adults, we realise that the earlier you start
to learn a language the easier it becomes. We try to incorporate
different subjects and activities into the French lessons
such as PE, geography, art, music and Numeracy. We promote
ideas about language, culture and teamwork.
Finally, I would like to say that I enjoy teaching the lessons
as much as the children enjoy taking part in them and I
am sure this will continue to be a success.
Merci and au revoir!

Sports News
Well done to those boys and girls from Years 5 and 6 who represented
the school so well at the Prestwich and Whitefield Cross Country
event at Heaton Park.
The team has been training throughout the school year at lunchtimes
and were a credit to our school in terms of their team spirit
and effort.
On the Saturday following the cross country we all turned out
again to see our Year 5 and 6 girls play in the Prestwich
and Whitefield netball rally at St Bernadettes. The girls
played really well and everyone was delighted with their
efforts.
Thank you to all those parents, grandparents
and staff who give up their lunchtimes and Saturday mornings
to ensure our children have the opportunities to play competitive
sport for the school.
Health and Safety Notices
Hopefully during the summer term the children will be able to
play outside most days. We would be grateful if you could send
in some sun cream and a hat both labelled with your child’s
name.
Please remember that children should have appropriate footwear
for school. Shoes or summer sandals should be worn appropriate
to a school uniform. Please avoid buying fashion shoes or boots
which hinder your child when running about at playtimes.
Jewellery should not be worn in school.
